About Mamma Mia! The Musical

Mamma Mia! is a jukebox musical with a book by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA including “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance On Me”, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. Anni-Frid Lyngstad, another member of ABBA has been involved financially in the production and she has also been present at many of the premieres around the world. A movie version, starring Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Pierce Brosnan was released in July 2008.

The musical opened in the West End at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999 and transferred to the Prince of Wales Theatre on June 9, 2004, where it is playing as of February 2010. Prior to the musical’s Broadway engagement, it made its US debut in San Francisco, California at the Orpheum Theatre from November 17, 2000 to February 17, 2001, moving next to Los Angeles, California at the Shubert Theatre from February 26, 2001 to May 12, 2001, and finally to Chicago, Illinois at the Cadillac Palace from May 13, 2001 to August 12, 2001. The musical opened on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on October 18, 2001 and is currently running, as of February 2010.

Taking place on a fictional Greek island, the show uses ABBA’s greatest hits to tell the story of a young woman on a quest to find her real father. Sophie Sheridan is about to be married and desperately wants her father to give her away. Since her mother refuses to talk about the past, Sophie reads her mother’s diary and finds the contact information of three men that she had intimate encounters with. She invites each of the men to her wedding and they all come. Eventually, however, it is clear that Sophie’s paternity is undetermined. But everyone involved agrees that they want to be a part of Sophie’s life.
